Sunarto Yudonarpodo graduated from the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in 1971, and earned his Master of Laws degree from The School of Law, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas in 1985, majoring in Comparative and International Law. Prior to earning his master degree, he also attended a post graduate study in the Notary Public sciences at the University of Indonesia, and an “Orientation in the US Legal System” at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Sunarto’s career with multi-national companies include field ex- perience of 25 years working for three different major American companies operating in Indonesia in the industries of insurance, oil & gas, and mining, respectively, as in-house counsel at senior executive positions, including the positions of Legal Counsel of IIAPCO (Independent Indonesian American Petroleum Company), a subsidiary of NATOMAS Company, San Francisco, then General Counsel of Maxus SES, a subsidiary of Maxus Energy Corporation (formerly Diamond Shamrock Corporation) of Dallas, Texas, and later Director & Executive Vice President of PT Freeport Indonesia, subsidiary of Freeport McMoRan of New Orleans, of Louisiana (NYSE “FCX”).
He used to be one of the two Founding Partners of Law Firm Aji Wijaya, Sunarto Yudo & Co., the predecessor of Aji Wijaya & Co. As a lawyer, he specializes in mineral resources, insurance, oil & gas, investment (both corporate matters and litigation). He is in possession of an Attorney License issued by the Department of Justice in 1976, and members Indonesian Advocates Association (PERADI), and Jakarta Lawyers Club. He used to be members of various professional organizations, i.e. Indonesian Mining Association (IMA), Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA), Indonesian Oil & Gas Lawyers Association (ISHMEI), Indonesian Insurance Lawyers Association (PAHAI), Indonesian Legal Consultants Association (AKHI), and AMCHAM (American Chamber of Commerce) and LAWASIA (Asia Pacific Law Association).
Sunarto wrote and presented papers in various local and international forum, in Indonesia or overseas, inter alia on: “Legal, Contracts, Insurance and Risk Management Aspects in the Oil & Gas Industry” (1989); “Promotion of Mining Investment in Indonesia: Investor Partnership with the Indonesian Government under the Contract of Work” (Vancouver and Toronto, Canada, 1993); “Legal Aspects in the Mineral Industry”, in the 4th Asia-Pacific Mining Conference 1994; “Legal & Investment Aspects of the Mining Industry in Indonesia”, in the 5th Asia Pacific Mining Conference, 1995; “Overlapping Laws and Regulations in Indonesian Mining Sector, and Recommended Solution” in the Indonesian Mining Conference, 2007.
